In a collaborative project between history and music, Y8 explore how music has been a tool for documenting history and protest. Zooming in on the topic of racial equality and exploring Work songs of the African American slave trade, Blues music of the deep South and urban North, and protest music of the 20th century, students create podcast documentaries to exhibit their research. The podcasts compile recordings of original compositions inspired by these genres, spoken word pieces, dramatisations, speech and essay excerpts and primary source analysis. Students explicitly learn playing techniques required to create Blues music in bands and to start improvising creatively.
